Hunger Games Inspired Survival Course

The Hunger Game Inspired Survival Course is a noncombat, day-long workshop that focuses on the wilderness skills made popular by Katniss in The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. During this course we focus on introductory archery, primitive fire making, and wild edible plant identification skills. Like Katniss, these skills can help to keep you alive in survival situations. The understanding of wilderness skills also gives a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and offers a closer relationship with natural world around us.

This course is run in Paris, Ontario – only 1 hour from Toronto.

Course Types:

Youth Survival Day Camp – ages 9-15
Our youth day camp is designed to engage youth and introduce them to outdoor survival skills. The course is led by an experienced Scout guide and archery instructor.

Adult Survival Workshop
The adult survival workshop is a more intensive course. The amount of content that is covered is greater, with intermediate and advanced survival skills being introduced.

Introduction to Archery

Having a bow in a survival situation can be a huge benefit, but only if you know how to use it. During this introduction to archery you will be taught by an experienced archery instructor:

  • bow selection
  • proper shooting form
  • mechanics of arrow release
  • archery terminology
  • safety


Wild Edible Plants

Wild Edible Plant – Trout Lilies

Knowing how to find food quickly is one of the most important points in a survival situation. You will learn how to identify some of the commonly found wild edible and medicinal plants that grow in Southern Ontario. You will also be taught:

  • various preparation methods
  • how to avoid over harvesting
  • common identification mistakes
  • how to use your field guide (provided)
  • identifying and avoiding poison ivy

Primitive Fire Making

Primitive Fire Starting - Hunger Games Survival Course

Primitive Fire Making

We will be covering where and how to find suitable fire starting materials, the basic principles that apply to all friction fire methods, how to use these materials to successfully create a fire. You will also be taught:

  • suitable tinder
  • proper fuel selections
  • using coal extenders
  • selecting natural materials used for “flint”
  • making and using a tinder box & charred cloth

Animal Tracking

There are many survival skills that a person can learn, more than we can cover in a single day. Here is a list of some addition skills that we will be covering in this course:

  • tracking – how to identify animals by their tracks and the age of a track
  • basic shelter building
  • traps and snares

Outdoor Adventures

We are located only 1 hour from Toronto. Come and enjoy the beautiful Grand River and paddle through the towns of Paris, Brantford and Cambridge. We offer Grand River canoe rentals, kayak rentals, as well as a number of local services and workshops. For the more adventurous we also do backcountry canoe trips to Northern Ontario.
